Misleading

There are many sayings that are reminders that it is easy to be misled by what we see. Sayings such as “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” This photo reminds me of another one: “small but mighty.”

This is Old Man’s Creek going over the Lower Falls in Hocking Hills Park. This creek is responsible for creating Old Man’s Cave, which is not truly a cave but rather a very large recess in the rock. The gorge carved by the creek is over 1 mile long. The park has over 2 million visitors a year.

All Things Are New

This photo was taken on a recent hike at Morris Reserve in Bellbrook. It is a newer park and though we have been there many times, we had never seen it with all of these purple flowers blooming. It was an unexpectedly splendid view walking along this section of the trail.

Often, the best experience is to encounter something new when there was no reason to expect something new.

Impressions

This is the lower falls of the Yellowstone River. Impressive even from almost a mile away. While we were there, I was able to experience the falls from the top and hike to the bottom of the falls as well as seeing them from the distance. Different aspects stand out from the different perspectives. It is dizzying to be at the top and look down. At the bottom, you get to experience the spray up close. But only from a distance are you able to appreciate context.

Changes

This is one of my favorite views – sunrise in Jamaica. I was at this spot every summer for over 10 years, but not since 2019 due to the pandemic. We are planning to return this summer, but things will definitely be different this year. Some things are back to the way they were before. Some are not likely to ever go back to the same.

One thing is certain. God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Is Believing Seeing?

I don’t think I had ever seen steam coming off a tree before. It’s dramatic to see steam rising from a lake or river; this was less dramatic but more fascinating. Fascinating because I’m not sure I would believe it if I didn’t see it.

How often in our lives do we need to see something firsthand before we believe it?

“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John‬ ‭20:29‬

Time to Relax

Taking a ride in a hot air balloon is an amazing experience. This is a photo from our trip to Albuquerque 3 years ago. Other than an occasional blast of propane it is so quiet and peaceful. And the views!

I can’t think of another activity (involving movement) that is as peaceful. Maybe floating in a canoe down a lazy river. These experiences emphasize the benefit of taking time to relax.
